Memo to Reporters March 16, 2012
Contact:  Barbara George, Women’s Energy Matters, 415-755-3147, bgwem@igc.org

What does California use for power, when nuclear reactors are offline?

That’s the question Women’s Energy Matters wants the California Public Utilities Commission to address, but CPUC ignored it in its 2-21-12 Proposed Decision pending in the Rulemaking to Integrate and Refine Procurement Policies. Longtime CPUC watchdog WEM is a party in this proceeding, which considers how California’s clean energy technologies can best be combined with traditional resources in utilities’ procurement plans.  After Fukushima Daiichi meltdowns, WEM proposed for CPUC to launch a planning process for replacing nuclear power with the cleanest most affordable resources available, should CA’s reactors be offline for any reason.

UNDER CONTROL

a breathtaking yet disturbing, often science fiction-like panoramic view of nuclear power plants in Germany. Volker Sattel got permission to enter control rooms, reactors and storage facilities for atomic waste where experts discuss risk management and security measures. Followed by a discussion with Michael Ahrens (German Consulate General of SF), Barbara George (Sierra Club, Women’s Energy Matters), and Umi Hagitani (No Nukes Action) .

TELL CPUC: REJECT PROFITS ON UTILITIES' FAILED ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS!

before Gov. Jerry Brown takes office and appoints two new Commissioners, the California Public Utilities Commission will vote whether to give utilities up to $77 million more "rewards" for energy efficiency programs that scored an "F" on their first-ever independent evaluations. Resolution E-4250

It would cancel the early opt-outs & prevent some of the worst anti-CCA marketing;CPUC is expected to approve.

PG&E's misuse of EE & solar funds to induce Novatio to stay out of the Marin Energy Authority is specifically mentioned in the Resolution. >>> and WEM Video "PG&E tried to buy Novato" >>>

The proposed decision:

"At the July 27, 2009 Public Participation Hearing, several speakers expressed concern about PG&E's use of energy efficiency funds to lobby against forming Community Choice Aggregators. While we have no clear evidence in the record on this point, we will require utilities not to use energy efficiency funds in any way which would discourage or interfere with a local government's efforts to consider or to become a Community Choice Aggregator." >>>

The CPUC gave in to electrical utilities' demands for $82 million in bonuses even though the utilites missed their eneregy efficiency targets.

CPUC gave into the electrical utilities' demands for millions$$ in bonuses though the utilites missed their eneregy efficiency targets. Utilities demanded in March 09 that the commission ignore the rest of the EE evaluation reports, & gave the utilities hundreds of $$ millions more EE profits in 09 and 10. Customers of PG&E, So Cal Gas, San Diego Gas & Electric, had their bills increase to pay for this.

A better solution: Cancel EE profits end utility control of EE, put people in charge who really want to save energy! >>> and 4 relevant Videos >>>
